Instructions: Read the passage given below and choose the appropriate answer for each question.
In this floating village in Brazil, there is only one way to travel. Students go to school by boat. Locals go to worship by boat. Taxis arrive by boat. Even the soccer field is often a boat. There are three homemade fields on land, but they are submerged now in the annual flooding of the Black River. If the wooden goal posts had nets, they would be useful this time of the year only for catching fish. So, young players and adults improvise. They play soccer at a community centre that has a roof but no walls. They play on the dock of a restaurant. And they play on a parked ferry, a few wearing life jackets to cushion their fall. The high-water mark in the Rio Negro this year was the fifth highest in more than a century of measurements.
As scientists study the impact of deforestation on the Amazon basin and the cooling and warming of the Pacific Ocean, extreme patterns observed over the last 25 or 30 years raise an important unanswered question-"Are these trends human- induced climate change or can we explain this with natural variability?"
Villagers said that passing boats sometimes knocked down power lines during periods of exceptionally high water. And while the soccer fields are usually available for about half of the year, the land has recently been dry enough for only four or five months of play. "We do not have a place for the children to play," said de Sousa, a shop owner, "They are stuck in the houses, bored." The most adventurous, though, will find a game somewhere.

An interesting incident took place when Swami Vivekananda was living the life of
a wandering monk. It was most probably in the second week of November, 1890, that Swamiji came to Meerut where by chance he met some of his brother monks who were also on pilgrimage. All of them were naturally very pleased to see one another after such a long time. They lived together and transformed the place into a second Baranagar Math, It is well-known that Swamiji was a great lover of books. In Meerut, he spent much time in reading. At his bidding Swami Akhandananda would go to a local library everyday to bring him a big volume of Sir John Lubbock's works and return it the following day. The librarian thought that Swamiji was not reading the books, that he was only trying to impress everyone. One day the librarian openly expressed his doubts to Swami Akhandananda when the latter came to collect another volume of Lubbock. Akhandanandaji reported this to Swamiji. On hearing this Swamiji himself one day called on the librarian and humbly said to him, "Sir, I have gone through the books attentively, and if you have any double said you may ask any question you like from the books." The librarian then asked a number of questions and Swamiji correctly answered them. The librarian was simply stunned as never before he had seen such a genius like Swamiji.

Character is destiny. Character is that on which the destiny of a nation is built. One cannot have a great nation with men of small character. We must have young men and women who look upos others as the living image of themselves as our shastras have so often declared.
But whether in public life or student life, we cannot reach great heights, if we are lacking in character. We cannot climb the mountain when the ground at our feet is crumbling. When the very basis of our structure is shaky how can we reach the heights we have set before ourselves? We must all have humility. Here is a country which we are all interested in building up for whatever service we take up, we should not care for what we receive. We should know how much we can put into that service. That should be the principle which should animate our young men and women. Ours is a great country, we have had for centuries a great history. The whole of the East reflects our culture. This is India -- a country of rich culture and heritage.

Discipline is of utmost importance in student life. If the young students do not obey their superiors and go without discipline, they will be deprived of much of the trairiing they should have at this period, and in future, they will never be able to extract obedience from others in the society. Such misguided young men will surely come to grief in the long run. Society will never accept them as persons fit for commanding and taking up any responsible position in life.
